Platform is an asset managing software I developed completely in-house for DBOX. Having tried a handful of existing 3D asset managers, like those produced by Autodesk and Design Connected, we found none that met our needs. Crucially missing from them was a robust search. A better search drove the foundation of Platform which is an incredibly flexible tagging based system. The simple goal for Platform is to minimize the amount of time we spend digging around in folders so we have more time to reflect, iterate and direct our work.
Platform's image search allows us to find images produced by the team by any number of criteria including time of day, weather condition, architect/developer or primary location of the image. This is helpful internally not just to find what we may have done for a particular client before, but also allows us to quickly find precedents for images that are actively underway. Platform has the ability to view VR nodes directly in the app for quick reviews.
Platform is much more than a viewer, its real strength is in how it manages 3D assets. It provides important stats about the objects, including their file size and the number of polygons, all important data when certain large scale scenes need to be as light as possible to keep down render times. 3D assets are processed when they are added, automatically creating proxy files, sets of resized textures, and materials are optimized. A rendered 360 of the object is produced over the render farm automatically. Objects can be dragged and dropped directly from Platform into 3DS Max where, if necessary, their textures are relinked behind the scenes, so if any asset comes in from any of our offices we do not have go through the tedious task of relinking it.
Platform's development is on-going.
